Just a dog?

I love my dogs almost as much as I love my kid. I have no compunctions about breaking traffic laws to get beloved members of my family urgent medical care. And I don't like police officers on power trips who are dismissive of the value of the lives of members of my family. So if I had been in Michael Gonzalez's shoes, I don't think Officer Paul Stephens would have survived the encounter captured in this video.

Stephens is "undergoing counseling"? I'll be happy to give him a session or two.

Believe me! I'm not a friend to cops on power trips, but there is no way I can condone 100mph on a busy highway. The cop did handle this wrong, but the jackass driving did even worse, and in no way should he be heralded, or forgiven for driving like that.

Lets look at it this way dog lives at most maybe 15 yrs at the high end (less is much more common, average is about 11).
Now lets compare that to my daughter's life span of 70+ years, they are not close.

I have a daughter and have had many dogs, and I'll tell you right now a dog, or any other pet is not a part of a family the way your flesh, and blood child is. There is no one that can truthfully say that it is either.

Honestly if this guy would have killed my daughter, because of his dog, which he may have considered family, he would never know what it was truly like to have a child.

From the intro, I assumed this was going to be one of these appalling 'cop shoots dog' cases.

I have to say I agree with the cop on this one. No way should a distraught pet owner be doing 100 MPH on the public road. When driving you need to be focused and calm, especially at triple digit speeds. I think the cop did the right thing for all concerned.

The drivers speed was clearly excessive, however, the manner in which the police office handled the situation was inexcusable. Just because he doesn't place much value on the life on a companion animal, doesn't mean that a pet owner does not. I have two large breed dogs, a malamute and a newfoundland. Those animals are my children. In my case, they are literally my only family besides my wife. We have no children, and are both long estranged from the rest of our families. If an officer was to stop me for speeding on the way to an emergency vet, he would have to pull me out of the car at the Vet, there's no way I would pull over. And if some unsympathetic clod said "it's only a dog, you can get another one", he'd be pulling me off him in a nanosecond. It's long past time for police officers to remember that their job is to protect and serve, not harass and insult.

In addition to a lack of sensitivity on the officer's part, isn't there also a lack of imagination? Who would it have harmed for the cop to have said, "Look, you can't drive 100 mph on this road. Let's get your wife and dog into my cruiser and I'll take you there with lights and siren"? New Braunfels and San Marcos aren't that far apart.

Regardless of how anyone feels about the situation, including me even though I do feel the situation could have ended differently, your statement that the officer would not have survived the incident had you been involved is ignorant and misplaced. To put anyone's life in a higher place of importance than an animal and to state so matter-of-factly that you would have killed the offending officer is absolutely ludicrous. I was hoping to come to your blog and find information and articles that would support my feelings of distrust for our apparent police state but this one line of copy alone has ruined that hope for me.
