Nobel what prize?

To win the Nobel peace prize, don't you have to have some palpable accomplishments along the road to -- you know -- getting people to stop killing each other? Not planning to escalate an ongoing war with an infusion of new troops might help, too.

So what in Hell has Barack Obama done to earn the damned prize?

To give him the benefit of the doubt, Obama has only been on the job since January. Maybe it's unrealistic to expect him to be a contender for the Nobel Peace Prize this year.

So why was he in the running at all?

But he wasn't just in the running. He won the goddamned thing.

I'm just guessing here, but I think that when Barack Obama went to Copenhagen to lobby for the Olympics, he took a side trip to Oslo to blow the members of the Nobel Committee.

Update: I'm not the first to note this, but the deadline for nominations for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize was February 1. Fast work, Barry!

I would love to know just what justification was offered for his nomination in the first place. Was his simply taking office enough?

I haven't had a lot of respect for the Nobel prizes in recent years (Krugman for "Economics," as an example), but this one really takes the cake. Nobel prizes are obviously completely worthless now.

Well, I suppose absurdity is out of the way now. What will they think of next?

Never mind. I really don't want to know.

A blogging neighbor of mine claims his nomination for the prize was turned in just 15 days after he took office.

Antiwar dot com has some historical info on the prize today.

My own feelings? I think they gave it to Obama as a jab at Bush.

I think they gave it to him because he is considered to be black.

C'mon Tooch - in a world where war criminals are rewarded and those that oppose war criminals are imprisoned and tortured, it should come as no surprise that a war criminal has been rewarded for his stoic service to imperial blood-letting with the Nobel Peace Prize.

If an obvious economic ignoramus like Paul Krugman can win the Economics Prize, does it not make perfect sense for a spineless warmongering marionette like Barack Obama to win the "Peace" prize?
