Whitewash on Taser incident

The Utah Highway Patrol has, perhaps unsurprisingly, given Trooper Jon Gardner an "attaboy" for attacking motorist Jared Massey with a Taser during a traffic stop for speeding. As I've written before, Massey was Tasered because he challenged Gardner on the grounds for the ticket and declined to sign it; at no time did he pose a threat to the officer or anybody else. Only the sort of person who really adores living in a police state would claim that people have no right to argue with police officers.

Cops are good at closing ranks, even when the public rises up in mass revulsion at their actions. Gardner is reportedly on administrative leave because of the sheer volume of death threats his actions have elicited from the public at large. I suspect the criticism has played a role in UHP's defensive response. Government officials -- police in particular -- don't like having their judgment questioned by the public; by declaring Gardner's actions justified, UHP officials were able to issue a bureaucratically worded "fuck you" to the mere civilians who called them on the carpet.

The proper response of anybody driving through Utah is to treat any UHP officers who pull them over like dangerous animals. The creatures just might attack at any moment.

No doubt about it, we're living in a police state. No fair hearing from a traffic judge, and tasered on the street if you don't kneel at the zipper and start sucking on command.

You mentioned the 7th principle, seems to me that the Utah Highway Patrol has forgotten the other 8 as well, 2, 3 and 8 in particular.

There's a news item out of .au where Massey is quoted as "feeling sorry" for the trooper. His sympathy is misplaced. John Gardner has demonstrated by his on-tape conduct that he is unable to handle the responsibilities incumbent on a peace officer and should look for another line of work. The fast food industry can use another french fry maker...

This story is just crazy. This cop should have his ass handed to him, maybe a civilian tazer firing squad would do the trick. Either way, I've traveled through almost every state in the United States and received numerous tickets for speeding (lead foot) but till this day I have yet to sign a ticket, and I won't, maybe I should prepare myself for "shock treatment"...good post, enjoyed it.

I was shocked and appalled at not only the COP but the UHP...

I think they should be sued and I hope that guys gets millions for that as the cop was totally out of line...

He was not a danger to anyone and he should not have used a dangerous weapon on the man...

they are getting out of control and should realize that people are not going to take much more of this...

We, the freedom-loving people, also need to "close ranks" as incidents of this type increase, and governments refuse to do anything about it. We should treat a taser-attack on one of us as an attack on all of us (just like the cops do when their authority is questioned). There needs to be some sort of legal fund set up, and a network of attorneys established, who will come down hard on each and every case, no matter where it is. we'll just keep bringing suits and criminal charges until they're exhausted. Keep the bastards on the defensive and off balance. Sooner or later a judge somewhere WILL see it our way.

But that's what it's going to take to make the abuses stop.

Otherwise, I hear there's a guy trying to patent taser-proof clothing...maybe there's a "market solution" to this.

Perhaps a few exemplary killings are in order? Simply tasering every cop who approaches the window of your vehicle seems insufficient to convey the extent of the outrage this sort of behavior engenders. Death to pigs.
